Kids Art Class is run by Sara Barr, a qualified primary school teacher of nearly 20 years, with an art degree from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee.

This fun, sociable and creative class is guaranteed to keep the kids busy during the school holidays, as well as offering the ideal opportunity to meet new friends, share creativity, and take part in art projects. 

Classes are designed for all ages and abilities, and everyone is encouraged to find their own art style. This is where kids can build confidence in themselves, enjoy what they’re doing and feel proud of their achievements.

This summer, why not make it your mission to discover the free events and activities happening in Culture Perth and Kinross venues.

For example, have you visited the Stone of Destiny at Perth Museum yet? The museum has other fabulous exhibits such as the Carpow Logboat and the NUWSS (National Union of Women’s Suffrage Society) Banner. 

There are loads of interesting items to view that you can discuss with the kids and the exhibits are always changing, so, you will always find something new. Then pop into the Stone Cafe for a spot of lunch or just a coffee and home-baked cake.

Or take a wander around the fantastic Perth Art Gallery, one of the UK's oldest collections, which highlights works by influential modern Scottish artists and is now the new home of the Fergusson Collection, featuring works by JD Fergusson and Margaret Morris. Younger kids will love their newly refreshed Hands On Art space. The gallery also offers family activities, a shop, coffee bar and toilets.

What about a visit to your local library? Another brilliant free resource during those weather challenging days. AK Bell Library is the main public library for Perth and Kinross, where you can learn about the history and culture of Perthshire, explore the children's library, grab a coffee or use the free Wi-Fi.

Climbing Summer Holiday Sessions

Academy of Sport and Wellbeing, Perth College UHI, 29th Jun to 17th Aug

Whether your child is brand new to climbing, or a more experienced climber, these fun sessions at Perth College Academy of Sport and Wellbeing are the perfect way for them to burn off some summer energy.

Running seven days a week, at a variety of times this 1.5 hour climbing session is suitable for children aged 5+. (if under 7 years old parent/guardian must stay within the building during the session)

There is a maximum of 4 in a group and all sessions are led by a qualified instructor. Children should wear sports clothing, clean trainers and have long hair tied back. Remember to pack a water bottle - it's thirsty work!

Free Play in the Park Sessions

Aimed at supporting all families across the area, the Early Learning & Childcare Team from PKC is running a variety of family play activities across the parks of Perth and Kinross.

There will be a main session daily, and everyone is invited to turn up and join in the fun. No need to book - the teams will be easily identifiable with Perth & Kinross Council Play banners on display!  

Daily Activities will include den building, fire workshop, bubble workshop, planting workshop, games, junk modelling, sports, and games. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Falconry Displays

Scone Palace, 11th July and 15th  Aug


Enjoy a fantastic falconry display and flying demonstration by the Raptor World team from The Scottish Deer Centre.

Join the team on the front lawn of Scone Palace where there will be a variety of falcons and owls for you to see and learn about from the experts. Feel the rush of adrenaline and awe as majestic birds of prey swoop overhead in dynamic flying displays-right above the picturesque lawns of Scone Palace.

After the display, have a wander around Scone Palace gardens and grounds, explore the adventure playground and try not to get lost in the legendary Murray Star Maze. After all that excercise, exitement and fresh air, it would be rude not to stop at the cafe for some well deserved refereshments.

Kids go Free at Scone Palace

Kinross-shire


RSPB Loch Leven 

Kinross, all year round

Loch Leven National Nature Reserve is a haven for families, nature lovers and wildlife watchers alike. Set on the southern shore of the loch, the reserve is home to swallows and breeding waders in spring and summer, migratory geese and whooper swans in autumn, and woodland birds all year round.

Red Squirrels are regularly seen around the visitor centre and woodland areas, while dragonflies and bees enjoy the ponds and wild flower meadow in the warmer months.

There are plenty of trails to explore including the Wetland Trail with bird hides, a steep woodland hill trail and the accessible, gentle Leafy Loop walk.

Visitors can relax in the picnic area overlooking the loch and surrounding hills. Families can hire pond dipping kits from April to October, Nature Quest backpacks and binoculars, and there is also a programme of self-led trails and events to suit the whole family.

Kinross Activity Centre

Heatheryford Country Estate, various times

Set in the beautiful countryside of Heatheryford Country Estate, just outside Kinross, Kinross Activity Centre offers a range of outdoor activities for groups looking for an exciting day out. 

Qualified instructors will show you the ropes in archery, axe throwing, fly and bait fishing, laser clay pigeon shooting and air rifle shooting.

Or, if you have a budding photographer in the family they offer morning or afternoon slots to capture some natural wild photographs.

Morning and afternoon slots £15, weekly £50 or yearly £150.

The estate is home to  spectacular ospreys in the summer, who feed several times a day at Kinross Fishery,(also on the estate), as well as the resident Kingfishers which are there all year round. Other fabulous wildlife photo opportunities may include, roe deer, badgers, red squirrels, pine martens, pheasants and otters.

At the rear of the fishery is a lovely woodland area where you can wander freely seeing the birds as nature intended. 

Kinross Activity Centre also runs kids' outdoor activity camps throughout the year with PVG-approved instructors.

Active Kids Adventure Park

Situated just north of Perth near Stanley, Active Kids is a fun-filled adventure park perfect for kids who love to play and, with both an indoor play and outdoor park to explore, it means that there is plenty for kids to enjoy whatever the weather.

Scottish Crannog Centre

Kenmore, seven days, 10am-5pm

The Scottish Crannog Centre is a family-friendly museum on the banks of Loch Tay, a couple of minutes’ drive from the village of Kenmore.

Showcasing the fascinating history of these prehistoric loch dwellings, the museum aims to engage and inform visitors about the lives of the people who made crannogs their home 2,500 years ago.

Your visit to The Scottish Crannog Centre includes a guided tour of the museum and artefacts as well as interactive demonstrations of ancient crafts and technologies.

Their enthusiastic team of knowledgeable and friendly Iron Age Interpreters will guide you through the crannog story, giving you a glimpse into pre-historic life, and showing you the skills and lives of folk 2,500 years ago in their newly built Iron Age village.

Tours run all day from 10am, with the last tour at 3pm. Please allow two hours for your visit. The cafe is also open serving hot and cold drinks and snacks during your visit. Dogs are always welcome!

Land Rover Experience Young Off-Roader

Dunkeld, seven days, 8.45am-4.45pm

Land Rover Experience Young Off-Roader is a junior Land Rover Experience programme for 11-17 year olds which puts the kids in the driver’s seat.

They will learn something new – and get that all-important adrenalin rush – going off-road on a specially designed driving assault course, tackling steep slopes, negotiating obstacles and driving through deep water.

With tuition from a specialist Land Rover instructor in a brand new, dual-controlled Defender 90, youngsters can increase their skills and confidence, impress their friends and have a lot of fun. The instructor will introduce them to the vehicle, teach them how to control it, then guide them as they drive round the agility arena before moving on to tackle a range of obstacles and challenges. 

The sessions last for one hour, they are running seven days a week throughout the school holidays, and can even be shared with a friend (30 minutes driving each) for double the laughs! The Young Off-Roader experience includes a certificate to take away with you.

The Hermitage

Dunkeld, always open

A perfect summer school holiday day out involves a walk amongst some of the most breath-taking nature that Scotland has to offer.

The kids can run, skip and jump to their hearts content and you can relax in the knowledge they're out in fresh air, away from their screens. Although, there are a few must do selfie -stops along the way!

Cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, this stretch of magical Perthshire forest just outside Dunkeld was an 18th century pleasure ground for the Dukes of Atholl.

Giant Douglas firs tower over you as you take the path to the roaring Black Linn waterfall, where the River Braan crashes into the foaming pools below. Deep in the woods, discover the picturesque 18th century folly known as Ossian’s Hall, which overlooks the stunning waterfall. 

Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife as you walk along the River Braan – you might even spot signs of beavers or red squirrels darting about in the tree tops.

Top Tip: Look out for the totem pole carved from a Douglas fir by three native Canadians from the Squamish Nation of Vancouver.

Glendoick is a multi-award winning garden centre, cafe, food hall and gift shop easily accessible on the A90 between Perth and Dundee. Founded as a specialist nursery in 1953, it now boasts a world-class array of plants and gardening equipment, an extensive homewares department, a range of ladies’ and gents’ clothing, mouth-watering food and drink, and attractive play areas for children.

The outdoor playpark, in the grounds of the garden centre, is open 9am-4.45pm every day, as long as weather permits, and is suitable for all ages and abilities. Children will love the large wooden frame for climbing and scrambling, as well as squeezing together on the basket swing, and enjoying the super-cool slide and wheelchair-accessible tunnel. For a quieter moment, there are interactive puzzles and a bug magnifying glass.

The play areas are free to use (but children must be supervised by an adult) when parents and carers are shopping or using the café at Glendoick. Auchingarrich Wildlife and Adventure Park

They believe that being a Bairn is all about playing and learning outside with tools to support and develop imagination and self-expression. What better place to do that, than a woodland!

Celebrating the magic of childhood and understanding the importance of play, they offer nature-based activities that support children’s development that fosters social, and emotional skills while forming connections to the world around them and a few special adults. Bairns are encouraged to be curious, ask questions and explore the landscape to help cultivate a life-long love of learning.

At Bushcraft Bairns,  they nurture the seeds of connection honouring intrinsic interactions with the land through play. They appreciate the values of permaculture – Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share, celebrating and linking these values in all that we do.

Working with children’s natural curiosity and wonder, they gently motivate them to push their own comfort zones or “edges”, exploring their ability level and providing appropriate challenges. 

Throughout these sessions, children are supported in their learning journey through the holistic approach that encourages the exploration and an appreciation for all things nature.

All sessions are led by fully qualified and experienced Forest School Leader and Early Years Educators, who understand the complexities of combining curriculum learning and nurture through nature.

Every Monday to Friday 9am-3pm throughout school holidays.
