Highland Laddies

The Black Watch Castle and Museum, ongoing till September 2026

Highland Laddies tells the story of some of the youngest soldiers to have served in The Black Watch.

From the 18th and 19th centuries through to the First World War, boys enlisted in the regiment as drummer boys, buglers, stretcher bearers and, in some cases, as front-line soldiers. Some joined seeking adventure, while for others it offered escape from poverty or difficult circumstances.

The exhibition also looks at the wider context of enlistment ages, then and now. During the First World War many young men lied about their age to enlist, some with the knowledge of their superiors.

Today, while under 18s cannot be sent to war, the UK remains the only country in Europe where young people can still enlist at 16.

Through personal stories and objects, this exhibition reveals the realities of life for underage soldiers.

Price: Included in museum entry ticket.

Vennels, Perth's Little Streets

Perth Museum, 29 May to 6 September

Vennels: Perth’s Little Streets explores the narrow streets known as vennels, closes, alleys, and lanes that have shaped Perth for centuries. Drawing on archaeological discoveries from the city centre, the exhibition reveals what daily life was like for the people of medieval Perth and the crafts and trades which thrived here.

Tracing the distinctive network of vennels woven through the city, the exhibition shows how these streets formed the heart of the medieval town and how they continue to influence Perth’s character today.

Visitors are also invited to explore the city’s evolving streetscapes through five newly commissioned public artworks.

Inspired by the city’s rich craft heritage, the exhibition highlights the stories and creative methods behind these works, one of which is already on display in Fleshers Vennel, with the others being gradually installed over the coming months.

Commissioned by Perth & Kinross Council’s Place Development team in collaboration with the UNESCO City of Craft and Folk Art designation, works by Neo Hanna, Ellietype & Lindsay Grime, Eleanor Wheeler, Heather Cumming, and Kate Robinson respond to the historic vennels within the vibrant setting of Perth city centre.

Jousting Tournament

Scone Palace, 20 and 21 June

Step back into Scotland’s history as the grounds of Scone Palace transform into an arena of courage, rivalry, and medieval pageantry. This Father’s Day weekend experience a spectacular jousting tournament and immerse yourself in…
Across the two days, visitors can witness three dramatic jousting challenges.

1.    Crowning Palace Clash
On the very ground where King James IV of Scotland was crowned in 1488, the pageantry of the era returns in full force. Four armoured jousters thunder down the tiltyard as cheers erupt and lances shatter. A spectacle blending sport, theatre, and sheer bravado.

2.    Perth vs Perth Showdown
Challengers from a far-off land arrive claiming to hail from a Perth greater than Scotland’s own. Knights saddle up to defend the honour of Perth, Scotland, in a dramatic face-off against contenders from Perth, Australia. Expect international bravado, fierce competition and family-friendly fun.

3.  Honour, Guilt & Glory
Steeped in Stewart-era drama, this challenge draws inspiration from the troubled legacy of James IV’s ascent to the throne. According to tradition, he carried a heavy penitential chain for life, mourning the death of his father, King James III of Scotland. Four Jousters take to the field exploring themes of family, honour, guilt and redemption.

With rich historical storytelling, breathtaking displays and the unforgettable atmosphere of Scone’s ancient coronation site, this is a weekend of jousting not to be missed. Prepare for spectacle, rivalry and pure medieval drama.

The Stone of Destiny

Perth Museum, ongoing

The Stone of Destiny is an ancient symbol of Scottish monarchy and kingdom. A king-making stone, it was used in the inauguration of Scottish monarchs at Scone, 3 miles upriver of Perth on the River Tay.

Its first documented use was in 1249 for the inauguration of the boy-king, Alexander III.

Taken as war loot by King Edward I of England fifty years after Alexander became king, the Stone was carried to Westminster Abbey in London; a symbol of Edward’s victory and his perceived right to rule.

Returning home to Perthshire for the first time in 700 years, this iconic artefact is still used to crown kings and queens of the United Kingdom today, including the coronation of King Charles III in May 2023.

Online pre-booking is no longer required for the Stone of Destiny.

Timeslots can be booked directly onsite at Perth Museum at the front desk. Please be aware last admission to the Stone of Destiny is at 4.40pm Monday to Saturday and 3.40pm on Sunday.

For groups of larger than 10 people online booking is available and it is recommended to book with two weeks’ notice to secure a slot.

For the safety and security of all, bag checks are in operation for visitors to the Stone of Destiny Experience. Once you have booked your timeslot, please ensure you arrive at the Stone of Destiny entrance 5 minutes before your allotted time.
